I have no advice to offer, as we’ve been lazy about our attempts to potty train Snuggle Bug (he’ll be turning 2 1/2 at the end of this month).

He has a little potty chair, he’s gone pee on his own (usually when we take him in there), and he’s wanted to go sit on his potty chair without our prompting but there’s been nothing consistent. We know it’s our fault because we’re not pushing the issue.

I will say one thing that works as a reward for Snuggle Bug is stamps. He loves when I stamp his hands with a rubber stamp.

I suppose eventually we’ll have to get our butt in gear (no pun intended) and focus harder on potty training Snuggle Bug but we’re just not there yet.

I’ve potty trained all three of my kids. We didn’t do it until they were each ready & excited about the potty. This happened at different ages for all of them. We had potty chairs and a little kids step for the toilet, so they could use whichever they preferred. We told them they could wear cool big boy underpants and have M&M’s if they used the potty. This worked well for my first two boys.

My third son wasn’t having any part of any of it. So approaching his third birthday, we told him that after his third birthday party it would be “no more diapers”. We told him this because he was completely in control of his pee and poop. We watched him stop, pee & poop all the time. As soon as he was done, he’d come on over and order us to change him. Gross. His diaper was dry in the morning and at the end of a nap, so we knew he had bladder and bowel control. Seeing as he was born special needs, I felt guilty and didn’t want to “push” him into the potty, but we were all getting sick of him controlling this situation. We felt he was being manipulative. He would scream at the toilet if we put him anywhere near it. Sigh.

So on his third birthday, after his big party. I put all the diapers in the shed as promised. Locked them up. I stripped him naked. Told him if he had to pee or poop, it would be in the toilet. He cried and screamed for hours. Until he fell asleep on me. I figured he pee all over me in his sleep. Nope. He slept naked on me for hours, woke up, and promptly went to the toilet to pee.

It’s been a joy ever since.

With my middle child we used the steps and potty that sits on the big toilet. It was great no mess to clean up. He was potty trained by 18 months but brought me a diaper to poop in until he was 26 months. Every day about 10 am he would bring me the diaper. It was way better then him hiding and pooping his pants. Eventually he started going in the big potty but I did not push it. My friends little girl did not want to poop in the potty and ended up holding it and needing an enema. Yes you have to ask him every 15 minutes to an hour until you see him going by himself or asking you to go.

We’re potty training right now, too. And, since Friday, it has been relatively smooth, minus the pooping. Poop is the absolute last thing they do on their own - something about control and that sense of poop falling into the great unknown…it just always seems to be the last to go.

We use Hershey kisses for a reward (because M&Ms are too tempting for me), but we’re switching to gummy bears next because I absolutely won’t touch those, and they aren’t caffeinated chocolate, haha. As for Tyler going on his own, absolutely not. I have to say, its time to go on the potty. And, this will probably go on for the next few weeks before he catches on. However, that being said, I must say that he did wet himself on Saturday and was IMMEDIATELY upset about it, so maybe that will stick with him for a bit. We have the “cool sensation” pull ups for when we leave the house, but they don’t do squat. He could care less if the pee goes cold!

Potty training takes a lot of effort on everyone’s part. Everyone has to be on board with it and be ready to go the distance or else he’ll find the back door and squat by it, so to speak.

Does Speedy have his own seat? Tyler just sits on the big potty, but this isn’t working very well in teaching him to be independent in going. However, I cannot STAND the little potties that you have to clean! Ugh! I’ve seen the seats that you put on the regular seat (Elmo comes to mind because that’s what Tyler wants me to get), and my in-laws told me they saw one with “steps” so he can climb up himself…may look into that.
