Gracey was awake before Carter this morning and as she was sitting in my lap looking out the window, she got very excited and started saying ‘hi’ to the moon. The girl is obessed with the moon and whenever she sees it, she usually says, “moon nice nice. I uv moon. He my friend. Hold it in my hand?”
this morning, she wanted to go outside so she could see the moon better. (BTW, I never did actually see the moon)
So I started my day by going outside in my jammies with Gracey to look for the moon and I can’t think of a better way to start a day.

I told Carter he had to take a nap today since he’s been up so much at night. He protested. I told him I would be back to check on him. I went back and he was standin gon his bed playing so I told him he had to keep his head on his pillow. 2 minutes later, he walks into my office carrying his pillow on his head and smiling.

And finally, a perfect picture of Carter… the shirt says it all, including the holes he cut with scissors at school today!

What about the children?

There is lots of talk these days about various issues surrounding the Presidential hopefuls. Lowering taxes, repairing the economy, ending the war (because that can be done with one simple decision..not) and the list goes on. A long list of promises they don’t even know if they can fulfill….it’s more like a long list of wishes…things they hope to achieve.
What I’d like to hear about is the children. We talk a lot about economy and war and taxes and oil/gas, saving the planet, etc….. but I don’t hear much talk about the children. About the hundreds of thousands of children here in the United States who currently are in the foster care system. A system that is failing them miserably. There are lots of opinions about why foster care sucks, but the root of the problem goes back to funding. We just don’t allocate enough money to care for these kids, to recruit and retain case workers who can really make a difference.
You’ve heard me write about Stella and my first hand experiences with CPS – I’m outraged that we live in a society where millions of dollars are spent on foreign soul to “save the children” or “save democracy” or, let’s face it, “save the oil.” Compared to the millions spent elsewhere, our children are neglected and abused by a society or a government who cares very little about them….proven by the money allocated to help and protect them. They are abused first by their birthfamilies and second by country that promises them “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
I watched Stella move from home to home – 7-8 over the course of ONE YEAR – and each time she moved she had to get a new therapist, a new psychiatrist, etc…. there wasn’t a chance for her to begin to heal. Last I heard, Stella was in jail for beating the crap out of someone. I’m sure she is out now but it’s the place she will eventually call home.
You can tell a lot about a person’s priorities by looking at where they spend the bulk of their money. What does that say about us as a nation?

Just don’t have much to say.
Contemplating a few ideas.
Busy.
No school last week and no school on Monday.
Ready for school to start again.
Mathew is laughing out loud a lot more.
Gracey is talking more and more clearly and is much more conversational.
Carter is taking on the role of teacher to Gracey.
I am looking online for fun craft ideas and craft kits.
And, oh…… I need HELP! We can not decide on a name for Mathew. Obviously, Mathew is his name but we can’t decide on a second name. We have contemplated having Mathew for a first name and also having it as a middle name but still using that one. So, I’m looking for ideas.
Give me your ideas in teh comments. Please don’t list a ton of name suggestions. Give me your favorite using Mathew as a first name and your favorite using Mathew as a middle name. If I like your idea and we use it, you’ll win big. You’ll win bragging rights for naming someone else’s child. ha ha ha
I will tell you that we (I) like names with meaning. I’m obviouly fond of Biblical names but don’t want a child named Jebediah Mathew Abraham….. you get the idea. We are also very interested in using Mathew as the middle name for the sole purpose of having his initials spell something.
Our last name starts with G. One of my favs is Benjamen Mathew G. But i’m not sold on it. I really like that his initials could spell BIG. or JIG. or DIG. or RIG. even PIG. Just cause we’re cruel like that.

The Moron Tax

It’s not that I am unsympathetic…. so many people lost everything in the storm and my heart goes out to them. It’s the people who chose to stay on Galveston Island that I have trouble feeling sorry for. I do feel sorry for the families of those people. The friends of those people. When a hurricane is coming your way and you live on a island that is only about 5 miles in width, choosing to stay to “ride it out” is a death wish.
Right now, as we speak, our tax dollars are being spent to rescue these fools. I heard a story this evening about a group of people who decided it would be fun to go stand on one of the piers that extended out over the water to watch the waves and the storm blowing in. (this was not during the height of the storm) They were drinking and having a good ole time tempting fate when a huge wave hit the pier, breaking it into many sections and throwing four of the men (i don’t know that they were men but I assume they were. No woman would do that. right? haha) into the water. The Coast Guard flew out in the high winds and under dangerous conditions to rescue them.
Every one of those IDIOTS rescued should be forced to pay for their rescue. To cover the cost of fuel for the helicopters, the wages for the workers, and compensation for the risk those guys took to come and get you. Same goes for the people who chose to stay in areas that were under a mandetory evaction. If you have to be rescued after the fact, you should have to foot the bill.
Let’s just call it the moron tax.

The storm was mostly uneventful for us. Except that kids have been awake since 3am. Yes. THREE AM. We had breakfast at 6.
Lots of branches down around here and we lost power about 2am. The sound of the wind is pretty cool when you walk outside. Yes, I had to walk outside this morning. Trees blowing and branches falling. Pretty cool.
Oh, and I think Carter has an ear infection.
everyone is safe and sound in our bedroom now. I can hear the wind blowing but no howling yet. I am hoping a branch doesn’t land on the roof and scare the hell out of me.
Daddyo is snoring….nay and Mathew are sleeping…and Gracey is asking to watch cartoons. ha ha
going to sleep now….i hope
